Ballast Nedam Offshore.

UX & UI Designer / Development

Overview

Ballast Nedam got a new identity in the beginning of 2013 provided by an agency. The identity they made however was only for the traditional print media. Since Ballast Nedam had a lot of websites running which were outdated the new identity also had to be translated to the screen. Subdivision of Ballast Nedam, Offshore, were the first to get a new website in the new style.

We took some of the elements of the designs made by the agency and started to play around with it to see what was possible with the provided shapes. What worked, what did not and what was technically possible since all websites were supported by Microsoft SharePoint. This was just the first site in a row to come, so we needed to design a lot of modules which we can also use later on in a future project.

After a lot of wire framing and sketching we also finalised on the design and started developing the website. When that was finished the only thing to do was fill it up with content, but thats where the problem started. Content was not there yet, content was written at the moment. In the end content didn’t match the wireframes anymore, new pages were born, others disappeared. Suddenly that was a priority to show etc.

At that moment it was hard to deal with since the deadline had to been postponed, we had to write more hours on the project and the internal client was not happy to pay that since they already have seen a working website. They didn’t understand there changes in the content caused a lot of extra work. Important lesson learned: content first!
